A Brief History About EIFS - Part 2
In the last blog entry I gave a brief history about EIFS and talked about some of the problems an improperly installed EIF system can lead to. These problems were first discovered during the 1980’s which erupted into legal battles between EIFS manufactures, building owners, general contractors & insurance companies.
With the premise behind EIFS being that it was easy to install & a cost-effective replacement for traditional stucco, general contractors switched to EIFS. They typically used unskilled or semi-skilled labor and cut corners which lead to thousands of improperly installed EIFS installations. The improper installations allowed the system to suffer severe water intrusion which lead to wood rot & mold issues.
EIFS manufactures claimed that the EIFS itself was not leaking, but rather it was not installed properly which lead to the problems.
After years & years of lawsuits, EIFS manufactures, general contractors and other associated industry professionals in one way or the other shared the blame of the issues surround EIFS. The general consensus was that EIFS was a good cladding system if it was installed properly.
